Alcatraz Swim
One of the world’s most iconic and unforgiving challenges - commencing August 2026!
On August 8th, Team NZBLUE Multisport will take on one of the world’s most iconic and unforgiving open water challenges - the Alcatraz swim in San Francisco Bay.
Known globally as a bucket-list endurance feat, this is far more than just a swim. It’s a test of resilience, teamwork, and purpose - all in the name of raising funds and awareness for causes that matter.
What Is the Alcatraz Swim?
The Alcatraz swim is a legendary open-water crossing that begins near Alcatraz Island, the infamous former prison and finishes on the shores of San Francisco.
Depending on the route, swimmers cover roughly 2–3km in open water, often navigating between landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco city shoreline, or even nearby islands.

But distance alone doesn’t define this challenge.
It’s not a race for beginners so it's a good job our team of 10 are all strong swimmers!
Participants are typically experienced open-water swimmers capable of handling both the physical and mental demands and after a 'few' endurance challenges over the years, our team is well prepared...or at least we like to think so!!

And now the not so great part, as it is dangerous!
The Alcatraz swim is often described as “brutal” and for good reason.
Freezing Temperatures - Water temperatures typically range between 10–16°C (50–60°F), cold enough to trigger, cold shock, rapid fatigue and risk of hypothermia
Powerful Currents - San Francisco Bay is known for strong, shifting tidal currents that can push swimmers far off course if not navigated correctly.
Wind & Chop - Even on calm days, swimmers can face, 1–3 foot waves, surface chop & reduced visibility
Marine Life (Yes, Really) - While shark attacks are extremely rare, the waters are home to A HEAP of marine life adding another psychological layer to the challenge.

For Team NZBLUE, this isn’t about ticking off a bucket list. It’s about purpose and doing good things to help those that need it.
